This summer in the North of Europe I had one of my best JCI experiences so far... It started with the European Academy from July 31 to August 4. One of the highlights for me was the outdoor day. With our
team we had to go through a number of teamwork assignments which
resulted in many learning points about team dynamics and leadership.
It was fascinating to see how the team evolved during the day
and increased its efficacy. During the preparation for the outdoor
part we learned about the Insights model which proved to be a
very helpful model to increase team effectiveness. I knew already that I mainly have a "blue" personality type, but one of the most important learning points for me personally was how to use these strengths more effectively in a team, as well as the importance of making your own and everyone's type explicit when forming a new team. Another important learning point came out of the General Assembly simulation. Our assignment was to promote a candidate for the national presidency My team's candidate was elected! From this I learned that both content and lobbying are important to be a successful candidate. As I recently had experienced the consequences of neglecting the lobbying, this assignment had a larger than expected impact on me. On the final day we had the honour of meeting JCI World President Jun Sup Shin. He gave us more insight in the history and the current state of the organisation. After his presentation we had an open discussion where some tough questions were debated. During the gala evening he handed us our graduation certificate. After the Academy I travelled to Stockholm where I was staying with a JCI member whom I met at the European Conference in Budapest. One night I had a dinner with a number of other JCI Stockholm members, where I had many inspiring conversations. After 2 days Stockholm, I travelled to Halmstad for the famous Crayfish Conference. This cosy informal conference offers a mix of international networking, training, beach games, and local Swedish culture with the traditional crayfish dinner at the home of one of the local JCI members. Finally I travelled to Copenhagen for 1,5 day of sightseeing, together with 2 JCI members from France. I was a nice stop to ease the transition back to reality So in conclusion, it's easy to see why this was such a great experience I really feel like I lived the JCI spirit: learning, a lot of fun, and international friendship!
Stijn Borremans |
